We're an International family who love exploring new places. Our designs are connected to our shared experiences and things we love! We're inspired by the food, language, sights and people we meet on our travels. We're currently based in beautiful Oman as IB PYP educators - we've been in the Middle East for the last 7 years. We're originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, with a mixture of P\u0101keh\u0101 and Samoan ancestry. We've been teaching and learning overseas for the last 18 years and have lived in Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Qatar and Oman.<\/p>
Last year, we sat down and thought about our future, mainly our retirement plans! (On a side note, we haven't yet reached our 50th year around the sun :) Our discussion connected to our love of travel, our son who has just started middle school, and where we might see ourselves in 6 to 10 years. We started researching the possibilities of 'passive income' and becoming 'digital nomads', where we found that the possibilities were endless! We initiated a couple of online ventures using different print on demand platforms. The platforms we started using fitted our requirements to begin with, but as we progressed we noticed a few things. One, the products, though good quality, were not sustainable or recyclable. Two, the rate of profit dwindled due to account fees. Three, we were completing with a huge market place. That's when we discovered Teemill!<\/p>
We didn't realise it at the time but have now figured out that the production of our brand was important to us. We started thinking about the impact of our brand and how we could adjust and be more postivie for the planet. Also, our IB teaching and learning has really helped us to focus on sustainable practices, SDGs, units of inquiry that focus on sharing the planet, international mindedness and citizenship. So we partnered with the lovely folk at Teemill who have pioneered a recyclable, sustainable and organic manufacturing process.<\/p>
Based on the Isle of Wight, Teemill is dedicated to revolutionizing fashion for the betterment of our planet. Their commitment begins with organic cotton farming, nourished by stored monsoon waters and cow poo. When processed, only the best fibres are used for spinning, ensuring waste is repurposed into cow feed or vegetable oil. Even the dyehouse effluent, a significant polluter in fashion, is recovered, filtered, boiled, and reintegrated into their process. Teemill's ethos revolves around sustainability and minimising waste at every step. Renewable energy powers Teemill's entire supply chain. Their factory in India relies on energy from two wind farms and solar sources, while in the UK, their facilities are powered by a solar farm owned by Teemill. All machinery is operated using renewable energy sources, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.<\/p>
The incredibly exciting part is that all Ma\u00edlu Designs are uniquely designed to be remade. Recyclable natural fibres that, when worn out, can be returned to Teemill to shred and re-spin for the making of new apparel - over and over again! A circular economy - love it! No plastic. No waste.
